Trading the Pacific for the Plains
Growing up in the vibrant, sun-soaked streets of Los Angeles, I never imagined I’d call anywhere else home. For over 30 years, I basked in the golden glow of California’s coastlines, the hum of the city’s endless energy, and the rich tapestry of cultures that make LA the icon it is. But life has a funny way of surprising us. Now, in my 40s, I’ve traded in the Hollywood Hills for the rolling plains of Kansas City, where I’ve lived for the past eight years. And while LA will always have a special place in my heart, there are some things about Kansas City that have won me over.
The Traffic Tango: LA vs. KC

Let’s kick things off with something every Angeleno knows too well, traffic. Los Angeles is infamous for its gridlock, where a simple five-mile drive can feel like a cross-country road trip. I didn’t truly understand the concept of “a mile a minute” until I moved to Kansas City. Here, I can actually cover a mile in, well, a minute! In LA, it felt like I was stuck in a perpetual game of red light, green light, but without the fun part.
Kansas City, on the other hand, is a breath of fresh air. With its wide streets and minimal congestion, the only time I find myself at a standstill is when there’s an accident. Otherwise, it’s smooth sailing through the heart of the Midwest. It’s like upgrading from dial-up to fiber optic internet, so much faster and far less frustrating!
Seasons: California Cosplay vs. Midwest Magic
Another thing that’s dramatically different between these two cities is the seasons. Or rather, the lack of them. In LA. Growing up in Southern California, we practically cosplayed the seasons. We’d bundle up in cozy sweaters and scarves for “winter,” even if it was a balmy 70 degrees outside. The idea of snow was more of a Hollywood special effect than a real-life experience.

But Kansas City? Oh, it’s the real deal. Here, we get to experience all four seasons in their full glory. Winter brings a blanket of snow that transforms the city into a winter wonderland. Spring bursts forth with blooming flowers and fresh green leaves. Summer sizzles with barbecues and sunny days, and fall… well, fall in Kansas City is something special. The trees explode in a riot of reds, oranges, and yellows, and there’s a crispness in the air that makes everything feel cozy. It’s like living in a Hallmark movie, but without the predictable plot twists.
Parking Pains: LA’s Pricey Spots vs. KC’s Free-for-All
Now, let’s talk parking; a topic that might seem mundane until you’ve tried to find a spot in Los Angeles. Over the years, LA has become a city where parking is more of a luxury than a convenience. Free public parking has become as rare as a rainy day in August, and when you do find a spot, it often comes with a hefty price tag. And the kicker? It doesn’t seem like that money is going toward fixing potholes or beautifying the city.
Kansas City, on the other hand, is a parking paradise. Free parking is plentiful, and even in the busiest parts of town, you’re never too far from an open space. It’s one of those small creature comforts that make everyday life just a little bit easier and let’s be honest, who doesn’t love free parking?
A Tale of Two Cities: Fun Facts & Hidden Gems
While I’ve touched on the differences that stand out most to me, both cities have their unique charms. Did you know that Los Angeles is home to the largest urban park in the United States? Griffith Park covers over 4,000 acres, minimizes the size of New York’s Central Park! And Kansas City? It’s known as the “City of Fountains” with over 200 fountains, more than any other city in the world except Rome. Talk about a hidden gem!
In LA, you can find one of the shortest streets in America; Powers Place, which is just 13 feet long. Meanwhile, Kansas City boasts the Country Club Plaza that comes alive during Christmas time with the lights and the bustling streets. Sort of reminds me of the Grove in LA, I love that place during the winter, but in KC the snow is real. These little-known facts are just a glimpse into what makes each city special in its own way.
