In a world where Hollywood often churns out reboots and sequels, One of Them Days feels like a breath of fresh air—or maybe a perfectly timed zesty breeze. This original comedy, starring the dynamic duo of Keke Palmer and SZA, delivers not only laughs but also a heartfelt reminder of the magic that comes from authentic storytelling. It’s a film that’s as smart as it is entertaining, proving that sometimes, the freshest stories come from the simplest ingredients.

Directed by Lawrence Lamont and penned by Syreeta Singleton, this Issa Rae-produced gem delivers a refreshingly fun yet heartfelt story. The premise is simple: two best friends, Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA), are in a desperate scramble to recover their rent money before the day is over. What unfolds is a rollercoaster of hilarious chaos and touching moments that left me grinning and, dare I say, a little misty-eyed. Yes, a lime can shed a tear or two!

Keke "Keep a Job" Palmer

Keke Palmer’s performance is a standout, showcasing the versatility that has made her a beloved figure in entertainment. From her breakout role in Akeelah and the Bee to her dynamic performance in Jordan Peele’s Nope, Palmer has proven time and again that she’s a force to be reckoned with. She’s not only an accomplished actress but also a talented singer and TV personality, making her one of the most multifaceted stars of her generation. Pairing her with SZA, who makes a stellar acting debut here, was a stroke of genius.

Sza

Issa Rae, whose production company Hoorae is behind this film, continues to be a trailblazer in Hollywood. Known for her groundbreaking series Insecure, Rae has made it her mission to bring fresh, authentic stories to the forefront. With One of Them Days, her commitment to celebrating the richness of Black experiences shines brightly.

If you're a fan of classics like Friday or The Wood, you'll feel right at home here. The over-the-top comedic scenes—like Alyssa's ill-fated attempt to retrieve sneakers from a telephone line or the duo’s wild encounter with a bully whose signature move is a literal butt-kicking—bring the kind of energy that’s been missing from the comedy scene for too long. But what truly makes this film stand out is its heart.

This movie is not just about Dreux and Alyssa’s antics; it’s a love letter to community. The apartment complex where they live is a character in itself, full of vibrant, interconnected lives. One of my favorite scenes involves an impromptu art show Alyssa and Dreux host in a last-ditch effort to raise money. Watching their neighbors rally together to decorate, cook, and provide music was a moment that truly warmed my citrusy soul. It’s rare to find a movie that balances comedy and sentiment so seamlessly, and this one nailed it.

The film was produced on a modest budget and has already surpassed expectations, grossing an impressive $14.23 million over its opening weekend. It’s a testament to the power of strong storytelling and star power that this film is resonating with audiences and critics alike.

My Citrus Rating. Here’s how it breaks down:

- Zesty: The highest rating – a must-watch!

- Refreshing: A solid 2 stars – worth a watch.

- Sour: A 1-star rating – maybe skip this one.

One of Them Days is gets a Zesty, must watch rating. I would absolutely recommend.

As someone who grew up in an era rich with African American films that made us laugh, cry, and see ourselves in their stories, One of Them Days felt like a homecoming. It’s not often these days that we get a fresh story featuring relatable Black leads, and this film reminded me of how much those narratives matter. Keke Palmer and SZA’s chemistry is electric, and their performances breathe life into characters you root for from start to finish.

I am hoping this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Dreux and Alyssa. The vibrant world they inhabit begs for more stories, more laughter, and yes, more community-centered shenanigans. Hollywood, take note: we need more movies like this. And maybe—just maybe—a sequel to keep the good times rolling. Until then, One of Them Days will stay at the top of my must-rewatch list, a zesty reminder of the power of humor, heart, and a whole lot of hustle. This film was more than just a laugh-out-loud comedy; it was a reminder of why relatable, authentic storytelling deserves a bigger stage.

Bravo. Well done.

Love,

Jess Pye
