Kansas city

Welcome to Kansas City! Whether you're new to the Midwest or just the KC Metro area, there's something special about this place...the friendly smiles, the community spirit, and of course, the barbecue! Moving to a new city can feel like you’re in a giant game of Monopoly, and you’ve just landed on a new square without any properties yet. But don't worry, because KC is the kind of city where people still wave at each other on the streets, and that Midwestern charm is very much alive. If you’re looking to build connections and make new friends, here are some fun, local-flavored activities to help you get started:

1. Get Involved in KC's Social Clubs and Leagues

Kansas City has a vibrant community scene. From local book clubs in Westport that meet at cozy indie bookstores like Prospero’s Books to more niche groups like Cowtown Swing Dance, you’ll find your people. Sports more your thing? There are plenty of intramural sports leagues where you can try your hand (or foot) at everything from kickball to cornhole. Whether it's softball at Loose Park or joining a volleyball league at Chicken N Pickle, you’ll get your competitive fix and make new friends while you're at it!

2. Meetup Events with a Midwest Twist

The Midwest is all about gathering and connecting, and there’s no shortage of Meetup events in the Kansas City metro area to do just that. Love trivia? KC has some of the best trivia nights around. Head over to Bier Station or Boulevard Brewing Co. for an evening of craft beer and friendly competition. For those who enjoy the great outdoors, there are Meetup groups that host everything from hiking in the Ozarks to kayaking at Smithville Lake. Plus, many of these meetups end with a visit to a local pub or coffee shop, where you can keep the conversations (and friendships) flowing.

3. Classes and Workshops: Learn Something New with a KC Flair

Whether it’s barbecue cooking classes at the KC Culinary Center or pottery workshops at Belger Arts Center, taking a class is a great way to meet people while picking up a new hobby. Ever tried a boulevard beer yoga session? It’s a real thing, and it's as fun as it sounds! There’s something about the mix of a little zen and a cold brew that brings people together. Or, if you’re more into crafting, check out the Crossroads Arts District for creative workshops that range from jewelry making to painting.

4. Volunteer in the Heart of America

Kansas Citians are known for their big hearts. Volunteering not only gives you the chance to give back to the community but also connects you with people who share your passion for making a difference. Whether it’s helping out at the Kansas City Pet Project, supporting local youth programs, or joining a river clean-up crew along the Missouri River, you’ll find opportunities that are both rewarding and friendship-making. Plus, you get to know the heart of KC, its people, and its spirit, up close.

5. Embrace the Local Coffee Shop and Co-Working Scene

If you work remotely or have a flexible schedule, finding your “third place” (not home, not work, but somewhere in between) can help you meet people organically. Messenger Coffee or The Roasterie are great spots to grab a cup, chat with the regulars, and get some work done. Revocup in Town Center Plaza is a place I like to frequent when I write and have a green tea, early in the morning. If you're into a more collaborative vibe, check out co-working spaces like WeWork at Lightwell or Plexpod Westport Commons, where networking events and happy hours can lead to new connections.

6. Attend Local Festivals and Events: A KC Must-Do

Kansas City is bursting with events all year round. From the Plaza Art Fair to Boulevardia, there’s always a festival, parade, or block party happening. These events are not only perfect for soaking up the local culture (and delicious food trucks!) but also for meeting people who love KC as much as you do. When I first moved here, I would Google "Things to do in KC this week". Don't forget the Kansas City Irish Fest or the American Royal World Series of Barbecue—two epic opportunities to mix, mingle, and savor the flavors of Kansas City.

7. Host a Midwest-Style Get-Together

Once you start meeting people, take a page from the Midwest playbook and host a good old-fashioned potluck or barbecue. Nothing says “Welcome to KC” like gathering new friends around the grill for some burnt ends and corn on the cob. Set up a few lawn games like cornhole or washers, put on some Jazz from the 18th & Vine District, and you've got yourself a Midwestern good time!

Moving to a new city is like picking up a new, fresh lime and squeezing it into your water—it adds zest and freshness to your life! Kansas City has all the ingredients for building meaningful connections. (An added plus is that you are in the middle of the US ; there are a lot of road trip destinations you can drive to within 3 to 4 hours. )

With its welcoming community, vibrant local culture, and endless opportunities to explore and engage, you’ll soon find that KC isn’t just a city—it’s a community that feels like home. So get out there, try something new, and let that Midwest charm work its magic!

Cheers to new friends, new adventures, and a new chapter in Kansas City! 🥂
